Sixteen indigent students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have received scholarship awards worth ₦ 8,925 million from the Professor Mike Adebamowo Foundation (PMAF) to alleviate their financial burdens and support their continued education.
At the award ceremony held Thursday, July 17, 2025, at the Senate Lounge, UNILAG Senate House, Executive Director of PMAF, Prof. Mike Adebamowo, emphasised that the foundation was established as a legacy of service to humanity, inspired by his academic journey and in honour of his late mother. “I am simply giving back to society the grace I enjoyed as a student. This is for the mothers still struggling to train their children,” he said.
The foundation’s mission encompasses providing financial aid to indigent students, offering mentorship, facilitating connections to job opportunities, and achieving a long-term societal impact through education. Selection criteria include academic performance, financial need, resilience, and character, according to PMAF Board member Mr. ObabiOlorunkosi Gafaar, who represented the Board Chairman, Engr. Tokunbo Oshokoya.
Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, lauded PMAF for the initiative and called on others to emulate the gesture. “We must be channels of blessings,” she said. “Giving does not require abundance, it requires heart.” She urged the beneficiaries to be responsible with the funds, focus on academic excellence, and become future givers. The event featured goodwill messages, a vote of thanks by student representative Adewale Ademilola, and closing remarks by Pastor Oyeyemi Adebamowo, Deputy Executive Director of PMAF. Founded in 2024 with a ₦60 million endowment, PMAF is open to students across Nigerian universities, aiming to prevent dropouts caused by financial hardship.
