Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO) has promised the University of Lagos (UNILAG) that the Geosciences building, currently under construction, will soon be completed and officially opened.
The SNEPCO team made this promise during a visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, on Monday, June 16, 2025. They said the new building will help improve learning and strengthen the relationship between the university and the oil and gas industry. The visiting team, which included senior officials from SNEPCO and its construction partner, 225mm Construct Limited, was led by Jiang Kun, General Manager of Development. Other members included Ahmed Abubakar, Falade Oladipo, Abu Elohor, Onochie Obiajulu, Engineer Ehebha Lawretta, and Builder Ahmed Lawal.
They were received by Professor Ogunsola and top university officials, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Professors Bolanle Oboh, Afolabi Lesi, and Muyiwa Falaiye, along with the Registrar, Mrs. Abosede Wickliffe, the Bursar, Mrs. Oluwafunmilola Adekunle, and the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Olusoji Ilori.
Jiang Kun, speaking on behalf of SNEPCO, said the company is proud to support education and innovation through projects like the Geosciences building. “This facility, once finished, will stand as a symbol of our commitment to building Nigeria’s future through knowledge,” she said. Engineer Ehebha Lawretta, SNEPCO’s Project Lead for Social Investment, praised the UNILAG Geosciences faculty for their guidance, noting that their input helped ensure the building meets global standards.
Professor Ogunsola, while thanking SNEPCO, stated that the project would enhance the university’s profile and deepen cooperation between the university and industries. “This building will connect theory with real-world practice and expand research opportunities for students and lecturers,” she said.
After the meeting, the SNEPCO team and UNILAG officials toured the construction site of the three-storey facility. The building will feature two 250-seat lecture halls, classrooms, offices, laboratories, and a penthouse. Once completed, it is expected to become a leading centre for geosciences education and research in Nigeria.
