A group of students at the University of Abuja has called for the return of Prof Aisha Maikudi as Vice Chancellor of the institution.
The group, which identifies itself as Concerned University of Abuja Students, issued a statement in Lokoja on Wednesday, signed by spokesperson Ozigi Salami. Prof Maikudi, a professor of law, briefly served as Acting Vice Chancellor earlier this year before a substantive appointment was made. The students said her departure ended reforms they believed were beginning to change the university.
They cited her focus on student welfare, discipline and research, and argued that the university needed continuity rather than another change in leadership. Prof Maikudi, who became Nigeria’s youngest professor of law in 2022, oversaw the university in an interim capacity for a short period. Neither the presidency nor the Ministry of Education has commented on the students’ position.
The University of Abuja has previously faced disputes over leadership appointments, with staff and students often divided on the process.
