The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has initiated a special retreat for its top management team to strengthen the agency’s capacity in delivering basic education across Nigeria.
The meeting, with the theme “Repositioning UBEC for Sustainable Basic Education Delivery in Nigeria”, is meant to review UBEC’s progress, fix significant challenges, and plan new ways to improve learning for Nigerian children.
During the opening, participants praised UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, for her bold leadership and strong push for reforms in basic education.
They also noted that even though there has been progress, problems like the increasing number of out-of-school children, poor infrastructure, lack of qualified teachers, low learning levels, and weak planning in some states are still holding the system back.
The retreat aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises providing every Nigerian child with a quality education. It also connects with the new National Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which seeks to make the education system more organised and accountable.
