Students of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) are facing increasing difficulties with campus transportation following the withdrawal of most tricycle operators and the limited availability of shuttle buses.
The problem worsened after the federal government raised fuel prices last year, forcing tricycle operators to demand fare increases.
When the Student Union Government (SUG) opposed the hike, about 80 per cent of operators exited the campus, leaving only a fraction in service.
Those remaining have largely shifted their focus to “drop” services, charging students up to ₦1,500 per trip, which is significantly higher than regular fares. In response, the SUG introduced four “Sienna” vehicles and a few tricycles managed by private companies, but the measures have fallen short of meeting demand. Many students still endure long waits, fatigue, and frequent treks between faculties and hostels.
