A delegation from the United States Consulate has visited Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as part of efforts to strengthen academic and innovation ties between Nigeria and the United States. The visit, led by Public Affairs Officer Ms. Julie McKay, focused on exploring opportunities for collaboration in research, student exchange, and technology innovation.
The delegation was received at the university’s African Centre of Excellence ICT Knowledge Driven Park (OAK Park) by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, and members of the university management, including Deputy Vice-Chancellors Professors Bola Babalola and Yomi Daramola, University Librarian Dr. Kemi Fadehan, Bursar Mrs. Toyin Abogan, and Director of OAK Park, Professor Sola Aderounmu.
During the engagement, Ms. McKay commended OAU’s reputation as a leading African academic institution and expressed the US Consulate’s interest in building bridges between American institutions and Nigerian universities. She highlighted areas such as research collaboration, faculty exchange, and funding support for innovation as potential points of synergy.
Professor Bamire enthusiastically welcomed the delegation, emphasising OAU’s readiness to expand its global partnerships and position itself as a cutting-edge research and innovation hub. “We are not waiting to be given; we are already building. This partnership can only amplify what we have started,” he said.
Professor Aderounmu presented some projects and startups incubated at OAK Park to showcase the university’s technological capabilities. He noted that with the right international partnerships, such as with the US Consulate, these innovations could reach a global market and transform local solutions into international products. The visit concluded on an optimistic note, with both parties wanting to initiate pilot collaborations that could eventually evolve into long-term partnerships. The university described the engagement as a “strategic step toward positioning OAU as a global player in academic innovation.”
