A five-day training program designed to strengthen the expertise of senior professionals in Bayelsa State’s education sector has kicked off in Yenagoa, the state capital.
A total of 110 participants are attending the training programme, which is jointly organised by the Bayelsa Education Development Trust Fund (EDTF), the State Teachers Training, Registration and Certification Board (TTRCB), and the British Council. The initiative aims to equip education professionals with the necessary skills and tools to enhance the quality of teaching and learning across the state.
The training was formally launched at Bayelsa Medical University by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah. Represented by the Ministry’s Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Mr Faith Ogbara, Dr Emelah highlighted the critical role of education as the bedrock of a progressive society and a driver of economic growth, national development, and social transformation. He stressed that the success of any educational system hinges not only on sound policies and adequate infrastructure but also on the competence, dedication, and vision of those who manage it.
Dr Charles Daniel, Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Education, appreciated the Bayelsa state government, EDTF, TTRCB, and the British Council for organising the event.
He also affirmed that the State Legislature was committed to passing laws that would enhance the quality of education in Bayelsa.
Dr Alice Atuwo, the Executive Secretary of the State Education Development Trust Fund, explained that the programme followed earlier capacity-building initiatives that trained 50 principals and 150 teachers. The current session will see 60 Master Trainers and 50 Education Managers trained further to enhance the effectiveness of Bayelsa’s education system.
Prof. Francis Sikoki, Acting Chairman of the EDTF Board, encouraged the participants to maximise the opportunity to improve their skills and expertise.
Mr. Daniel Fwanshishak, Head of English and Schools at the British Council, outlined that the initiative’s primary goal is to build functional systems and ensure quality assurance in the educational sector. Dr. Peremoboere Ugolo, Acting Executive Chairman of the TTRCB, also noted that the resource persons leading the training were carefully selected experts in the arts, social sciences, and sciences to retrain primary and secondary school teachers to improve learning outcomes.
