Once regarded as a proud centre of technical learning in Benue State, Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, is now at a turning point. That message was clear when the Ochi’Idoma of Idoma land, His Royal Majesty, Agabaidu John Elaigwu Odogbo, challenged the institution’s leadership to rise and reclaim its lost glory.
The royal father gave this charge during a courtesy visit by the Polytechnic’s management team, led by the Rector, Arc. Dr Henry Ojobo, to his palace in Otukpo. Speaking with the calm authority of a custodian of culture, the Ochi’Idoma described the Polytechnic as more than a school. He called it a public trust that must serve both learning and character.
“Education leadership is not a privilege but a sacred duty of service,” the monarch said. He urged the Rector to enforce academic standards, rebuild infrastructure and restore the technical and moral values for which the school was once known. According to him, without discipline and integrity, certificates lose their meaning, and society pays the price.
Education experts in Benue State agree with this position. A senior education analyst based in Makurdi noted that polytechnics play a key role in skills development and youth employment. “When standards drop, the economy suffers. Strong leadership and accountability are the only way forward,” he said.
Security also featured strongly in the discussion. The Ochi’Idoma raised concerns about safety on and around the campus, calling for closer cooperation among school authorities, community leaders, and youth groups. Community development advocates say this approach is timely, as schools thrive best when host communities see them as partners rather than strangers.
Responding, Dr Ojobo thanked the traditional ruler for his fatherly advice and prayers. He explained that the visit was part of a broader effort to rebuild trust, promote peace, and involve all stakeholders. The Rector highlighted steps already taken by his administration, including improved campus security, digitisation of school processes, restoration of the water supply, improved staff welfare, and firm action against certificate forgery and corruption.
With him were key officials, including the Registrar, Dr Sunday Apochi, and the Bursar, Mr Joseph Kase, signalling a united management front.
As many stakeholders now believe, the road to recovery for Benue State Polytechnic will not be easy. Nevertheless, with firm leadership, royal support and community collaboration, there is renewed hope that the institution can once again stand tall as a true beacon of learning and service.
