3 Degrees That Sound Glamorous but Rarely Pay Off

In today’s competitive job market, not all degrees are created equal. While some fields guarantee high demand and stable pay, others lure students with prestige and passion but leave them struggling to find jobs or worse, forced to retrain. Employers now prize digital skills, adaptability, and real-world experience over paper qualifications.

Below are five degrees that may not deliver the career boost students expect—and why they are falling short.

1. Mass Communication

Once the golden ticket to a career in media, this degree has not kept up with the digital revolution. Most programmes still lean on outdated print journalism and theory, leaving graduates underprepared for content marketing, video editing, or data-driven storytelling skills now demanded by employers.

2. English & Literary Studies

Critical thinking and creativity? Yes. Job prospects? Not so much. Without a clear career path, many graduates end up in oversaturated teaching roles or competing for scarce editorial positions. Most have to pivot, adding qualifications in law, publishing, or even tech just to stay relevant.

3. International Relations & Diplomacy

It sounds prestigious, but jobs in embassies, foreign service, or international NGOs are few and far between. Theoretical-heavy curricula often fail to teach the hard skills; such as foreign languages, policy analytics, or grant writing that employers need.
