The Abia State Government has issued a strong warning to public school teachers over absenteeism and irregular attendance. Lady Lydia Onuoha, Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), gave the warning during a press conference in Umuahia on Tuesday, July 2, 2025. She stated that any teacher found guilty of misconduct or negligence would face punishment, including a reprimand, suspension, or dismissal, in accordance with the Public Service Rules and the Teachers’ Code of Conduct.
She noted that despite Governor Alex Otti’s efforts to improve teachers’ welfare, including prompt salary payment, approved promotions, and the actualisation of the 27.5% Teachers’ Special Salary (TSS), some teachers still fail to attend regularly. To curb the trend, ASUBEB plans to introduce a Biometric Attendance System in schools and will monitor compliance across the state with the help of local education authorities and school management committees.
