The Federal Government has appointed Professor Mathew Adamu as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, now renamed Yakubu Gowon University.
A statement by the Acting Registrar, Roseline Adakayi, said he will serve for three months from 11 August, replacing Professor Patricia Manko Lar, who has held the role in acting capacity since February. Adakayi said Professor Lar “provided purposeful leadership” and initiated the process for appointing a substantive vice-chancellor. She added that Professor Adamu’s main task will be to support the Governing Council in concluding that process in line with statutory guidelines.
Professor Adamu is a veterinary scholar with over 27 years’ experience in teaching, research and administration. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Maiduguri and a PhD in Veterinary Surgery from the University of Pretoria. He has served as Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi. He has held senior governance roles, including Acting Vice-Chancellor during transitional periods. The university thanked Professor Lar for her service and wished Professor Adamu success “in steering the institution forward during this transition period.”
