The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has launched the Sustainability Hour initiative to integrate sustainability and environmental education into Nigeria’s school curriculum.
Speaking at the launch in Lagos, ACCA Nigeria Country Head, Thomas Isibor, said the programme aims to equip young learners with the values and knowledge needed to address global challenges such as climate change, ethical governance, and sustainable development.
He explained that the monthly one-hour sessions, designed for students aged 10-16, would be delivered by teachers trained by ACCA to promote awareness of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
ACCA’s Director for Africa, Jamil Ampomah, said the programme would inspire future leaders to advocate for sustainability while aligning with national efforts to build environmentally responsible citizens.
Oreoluwa Finnih, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on SDGs, described the initiative as timely and aligned with the state’s THEMES Plus Agenda.
Other speakers, including Rabiu Olowo, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, and AISEN Chairperson Adeola Arofin, lauded the project as a crucial step in preparing Nigeria’s next generation for a sustainable future.
