Nigerian Afro-pop artist Adekunle Gold stirred controversy online after offering ₦250,000 each to select First-Class graduates, while pointedly excluding alumni of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
The artist, also known as AG Baby, had initially called on First-Class graduates to post their transcripts via X (formerly Twitter), prompting widespread engagement. Hours later, he confirmed that selected beneficiaries had received the funds, with screenshots surfacing of cash disbursements.
However, his follow-up post—“OAU Students, do not bother”—triggered backlash. Users accused him of harbouring a grudge over an incident in 2015, where he was reportedly booed during a performance at OAU.
Critics called the move petty, while supporters defended his discretion in choosing beneficiaries. “It is his money,” one user posted. “He is not obligated to fund everyone.” While many applauded the gesture during tough economic times, the giveaway also raised red flags. Cybersecurity experts cautioned against sharing transcripts online, citing risks of identity theft and data misuse. Despite the backlash, dozens of recipients publicly expressed gratitude, calling the support “life-changing.”
