Anambra Polytechnic Opens Skills Centre, State Government Promises Support

Anambra State Polytechnic in Mgbakwu has launched a new Skill Empowerment and Development Centre (SEDC)

Anambra State Polytechnic in Mgbakwu has launched a new Skill Empowerment and Development Centre (SEDC) to help students acquire practical skills that can be applied to secure employment or start their businesses. The centre, located near Awka, was officially opened by Dr. Ngozi Okelekwe, the Southeast Director of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). The state government has also pledged its support for the project, aiming to empower more young people with valuable skills for the future.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Okelekwe praised the polytechnic’s efforts, describing the centre as one of the best in the region. She noted that students will receive nationally recognised skill certificates after meeting quality training standards under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme. The federal government, she added, has already identified 25 key skill gaps that need to be filled by trained youths. Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Njideka Rita Chiekezie, said the goal of the SEDC is to produce graduates with one academic degree and two practical skills, aligning with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s “1Youth 2Skills” initiative. She listed eight skill areas available at the centre, including cosmetology, welding, ICT, solar installation, bakery, tailoring, and greenhouse farming.

Dr. Chiekezie welcomed support from the state government, especially in providing start-up kits for students who complete their training. Mr. Patrick Aghamba, Commissioner for Youth Empowerment, confirmed the government’s readiness to partner with the institution. He encouraged the school to align with the state’s 1Youth 2Skills programme, which offers trainees both skills and business starter packs. Also speaking, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, represented by Dr. Oyibo Alor, urged students to take advantage of the opportunity for self-reliance and wealth creation.
