The people of the Asamabiri community in Sagbama Local Government Area have expressed their appreciation to the Bayelsa State Government and the Education Development Trust Fund (EDTF) for providing a water project to educational institutions in the area.
The beneficiaries include Government Secondary School and Community Primary School, Asamabiri—a riverine settlement accessible by a thirty-minute speedboat ride from Agbere in Sagbama Local Government Area.
In the past, residents, including pupils, students, and teachers, relied on the river for drinking, cooking, and other domestic needs, often leading to cases of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea. However, the recent construction of a 9,000-litre water facility by the EDTF has brought relief to the community. The traditional ruler, Amananowei Chief Joseph Odoni, conveyed the gratitude of the people during the handover ceremony.
Also, Mr Edwin Moses, the Principal of Government Secondary School, stated that the water project would address the long-standing challenges faced by students, teachers, and National Youth Service Corps members. He pledged that the facility would be properly maintained.
Representing the Commissioner for Education, Mr Monday Eke, Director of Examinations and Records at the State Ministry of Education, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing basic amenities in schools across the state.
Team Lead of the EDTF delegation to Asamabiri and Chairman of the Scientific Research and Technology Development Support Committee, High Chief Adombazi Tawari, described the project as a significant milestone in efforts to provide clean water and promote hygiene. He urged the community to protect the facility.
In his remarks, Mr Emmanuel Aku, Technical Director of the Sustainable Partnership Initiative for Development (SPID), assured that the agency would continue its partnership with the EDTF to enhance learning and teaching environments in Bayelsa schools.
