The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has suspended its planned strike following assurances from the Federal Government to address key issues affecting the polytechnic sector.
ASUP President, Shammah Kpanja, announced the decision in a statement on Sunday, saying the union’s National Executive Council had resolved after reviewing the government’s recent commitments.
He said the union had noted progress in several areas, including the release of a circular on the Peculiar Academic Allowance by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, and renewed funding under the 2025 NEEDS Assessment intervention for polytechnics.
Other developments include the reconstitution of the government’s renegotiation committee to include the polytechnic sector and steps to address leadership issues at Federal Polytechnics Nekede and Ekowe.
ASUP also cited efforts to pay arrears of the 25% and 35% salary adjustments, as well as promotion arrears owed to staff.
The union, however, gave the government a six-week deadline to implement pending resolutions, warning that it would reconvene to reassess compliance.
Kpanja said the decision to suspend the strike demonstrated good faith and was meant to allow time for the full resolution of all outstanding issues.
