The Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions (ASURI) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to revoke the appointment of Mrs. Funke Adepoju as Director General of the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), citing violations of federal guidelines.
In a letter dated May 2, 2025, ASURI described Adepoju as an external candidate and argued that her selection bypassed established procedures.
The union spoke about the absence of a public vacancy announcement, shortlisting, examinations, and interviews, which the Conditions of Service (COS 2019) and a 2017 circular from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation mandate for Federal Research and Development Agencies.
ASURI stated that the appointment disregards the principle of internal progression, noting that Mr Olutunde Oladele Eniaiyejuni, who had served as deputy to the former DG for eight years, was appointed as Acting DG following the expiration of Mrs Cecilia Umaru Gaya’s tenure on April 9, 2025.
The union urged President Tinubu to consider appointing a substantive Director-General from among ASCON’s qualified internal directors, in line with federal regulations that promote justice, equity, and institutional integrity.
This development follows earlier calls from the Badagry Renaissance Movement for the appointment of an indigene as ASCON DG, given that the institution in Badagry, Lagos, has never had a local appointee in its 52-year history.
As of now, there has been no official response from the presidency regarding ASURI’s petition.
