The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the Federal Government’s enforcement of the “no work, no pay” policy against striking university lecturers, insisting instead on a “no pay, no work” stance.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made this known on Wednesday during a press briefing after visiting Abia State Governor Alex Otti in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South. He criticised the government’s position as “illogical and insensitive,” questioning how workers could remain productive without being paid their entitlements.
Ajaero blamed the recurring strikes in the education sector on the Federal Government’s persistent failure to honour agreements reached with labour unions since 2009. He stated that “the cause is non-payment, and the consequence is no work,” adding that punishing workers would not resolve systemic problems.
He disclosed that unions in the education sector would meet on Monday to determine a collective response to the government’s handling of the crisis.
The NLC leader also warned that neglecting education was weakening Nigeria’s human capital base, pushing lecturers abroad, and threatening national development.
Recall that ASUU began a two-week warning strike on October 13 after a 14-day ultimatum lapsed without government action on key demands.
