Governor Mai Mala Buni has approved the implementation of the new minimum wage, specifically the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) and the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS), for both Academic and non-academic staff of the University.
This comes less than 12 hours after the Members of the Academic Staff Union (ASUU) of Yobe State University, Damaturu, embarked on industrial strike action. In a letter addressed to the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development and signed by Shuaibu Ibrahim-Amshi on behalf of the Head of Service, the governor indicates that the implementation is effective from July 11, 2025. Although officials of the Academic Staff Union of Yobe State University have yet to comment on the approval, the government anticipates that the Industrial Strike Action will soon be resolved, allowing academic activities to resume at the university.
The Head of the Civil Service, Tonga Betara-Bularafa, informed Channels Television’s correspondent in a telephone conversation that Governor Buni had earlier approved the implementation of the salary structure as of July 10, 2025. However, the approval letter did not reach the Association early, which resulted in the Industrial Action.
