Egypt Eyes Stronger Academic Ties with Belgium’s VU

Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr Ayman Ashour, met with Professor Jan Danckaert, President of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels on April 15, 2025, to explore new academic and research collaborations between Egyptian universities and the Belgian institution.

The meeting focused on establishing joint academic programmes, research initiatives, student exchanges, and faculty partnerships.

Dr. Ashour spoke on the importance of strengthening ties with European universities as part of Egypt’s broader strategy to enhance its higher education sector.

He also referenced the recent visit of the French President to Cairo, during which 42 cooperation agreements were signed with Egyptian universities, signalling a growing momentum in European-Egyptian academic collaboration.

Additionally, Dr. Ashour outlined Egypt’s National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research 2030, which aims to integrate education with industry and support sustainable development goals.

The strategy states that regional alliances and human capital development are needed to drive economic growth.
