Enugu State has begun phasing out traditional primary and junior secondary schools as it rolls out Smart Green Schools, Governor Peter Mbah’s flagship education project.
In a broadcast on Monday, Mbah stated that the initiative would replace outdated infrastructure and rote learning with technology-driven and experiential teaching, describing it as a step toward preparing children for a global economy.
“Tomorrow is here, not just a slogan; it is a covenant with the future,” the governor said. “Our sovereignty begins in the classroom, with the quality of education we give our children.”
The new schools, 260 in total, are designed with digital classrooms, robotics and AI labs, ICT centres, e-libraries, and smart farms powered by renewable energy. Pupils will also receive free uniforms, books, meals and tablets, while each school will have clinics, water systems and accommodation for teachers.
Mbah admitted that some schools are still under construction but promised all would open this term. He urged communities to protect the facilities, calling them “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring world-class education home to Enugu.” The state has allocated 33% of its budget to education to support the programme.
