Experts and industry leaders on Tuesday convened at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to discuss equitable partnerships and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in Africa’s development.
Declaring the International Week open, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folasade Ogunsola, said the discussions aimed to shape “the narrative of inclusion, innovation and global equity in the age of Artificial Intelligence.” She described AI as an opportunity for Africa to “leapfrog limitations and reimagine education, healthcare, governance and industry.”
Ogunsola reassured the university’s commitment to becoming a hub for AI research and innovation that reflects African realities while meeting global standards.
Yvonne Ike, Managing Director and Head of Sub-Saharan Africa at Bank of America, urged stronger collaboration between Nigeria and global research institutions to enhance technological growth, citing the nation’s creative influence worldwide. Also, OpenAI’s African Lead, Emmanuel Lubanzadio, announced the launch of the OpenAI Academy in Africa, noting that AI is already solving pressing problems across the continent.
