Experts Urge Shift to Research-Based Education

Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, former Head of Service of the Federation, and Prof. Jonathan Babalola, Vice Chancellor of Bowen University, have called for a shift from certificate-based education to research-driven policies and performance-based rewards.

They made the call during the 60th anniversary of postgraduate studies at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, where 29,887 students have graduated over six decades. Prof. Babalola stated that many Nigerian graduates lack the skills required for today’s job market due to outdated teaching methods, inadequate mentorship, and issues such as plagiarised research and fake degrees. He urged the government to fund education more effectively and adopt policies based on sound research and evidence. Prof. Afolabi noted that graduates in the past were more job-ready and called for a complete update of the country’s school curriculum to meet modern needs.
