A new study from Northwestern University has raised alarm over the rise of fake scientific research. The researchers found that false studies are being published faster than real, trustworthy ones.
According to Professor Luís Amaral, one of the lead researchers, there is now an underground network of fraudsters working together to produce fake science. The Professor referred to them as “criminal organisations” that are damaging the reputation of real science, with millions of dollars involved in their operations.
The study showed that these fake papers are not just occasional mistakes by individuals. Instead, they belong in a hidden system, creating and spreading false results without the public knowing.
Amaral, who has loved science since childhood, said it is sad and disappointing to see people using science for fraud. Nevertheless, he believes that science is still fundamental, and people must stand up to protect it from this growing threat.
