Students and residents around Bayero University Kano (New Site) were thrown into panic on Saturday evening after a violent confrontation erupted between horse riders and officers of the Nigerian Police.
The clash occurred at about 4:50 p.m. in the Rimin Gata area opposite the university, when a surveillance team from the Rijiyar Zaki Division attempted to halt what was described as an unauthorised horse race. According to sources, police had been tipped off that the race could spiral into criminal activity, including phone snatching and possible fatalities. The officers moved to disperse the gathering but met stiff resistance from the riders, sparking a scuffle that drew crowds of onlookers and students.
Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as officers dragged some riders while others protested what they called excessive force. “The situation was frightening. Students feared it could escalate further,” one witness told reporters. Although no deaths were recorded, uncertainty remains over whether arrests were made. Normalcy was eventually restored, but the incident has left students uneasy about security around the campus. The Kano State Police Command has yet to release an official statement.
