The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, has recorded significant improvements in infrastructure, healthcare delivery, and staff welfare since the appointment of Professor Azubuike K. Onyebuchi as Chief Medical Director in April 2019.
Onyebuchi, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and fellow of several medical colleges, has overseen major upgrades, including the construction of more than 10 kilometres of internal roads, a 24-hour pharmacy, and a new Accident and Emergency Complex.
Other completed projects include a neonatal complex, an assisted reproduction centre, an e-medical library, an orthopaedic ward, and oxygen plants to support critical care. The hospital has also commissioned new staff quarters, renovated existing facilities, and introduced internal telecommunication systems to enhance operations and security. Clinical services have expanded to include renal transplantation, a move that has helped reduce medical tourism.
Under his leadership, FMC Umuahia has prioritised patient care, staff promotion, and research capacity. Onyebuchi, who holds a professorial rank at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, has published extensively in reproductive health and medical sciences.
His tenure has been widely credited with transforming the once-ailing facility into a modern, patient-friendly institution in the South East.
