Oluwafemi Sobowale, a 27-year-old from Abeokuta, Ogun State, has graduated with a first-class degree in Computer Science from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), after years of financial hardship.
Sobowale said he spent five years teaching in a primary school to save money for higher education after being unable to secure admission immediately after secondary school. He later obtained a diploma in Computer Engineering before gaining direct entry into FUNAAB in 2022.
“Teaching opened my eyes to discipline and the value of prior knowledge,” he said, adding that his determination was fueled by his mother’s words: “Three generations must not suffer.”
At FUNAAB, he maintained consistent performance and graduated in July 2025 with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.51.
Despite describing his early results as discouraging, he said perseverance and family support helped him stay on track. Beyond academics, Sobowale developed skills in web development, data science, and machine learning. He also worked on projects such as privacy preservation using anonymisation.
Looking ahead, he hopes to pursue a master’s degree in Data Science and Machine Learning, while contributing solutions to Nigeria’s tech industry.
