Professor Folasade Olajuyigbe, an Enzyme and Environmental Biotechnology specialist at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), has called for strategic investment in enzyme biotechnology to foster sustainable economic growth and address environmental pollution in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 180th Inaugural Lecture of the university on May 6, 2025, Professor Olajuyigbe stated that enzymes could play a key role in transforming industries by providing eco-friendly alternatives to harmful chemical processes.
She urged the Nigerian government to allocate more funds for research and development in this field, which could drive solutions for waste treatment, bioremediation, and pollution control.
Enzymes, according to Professor Olajuyigbe, are invaluable in several sectors.
They are essential in drug development, particularly for anti-retroviral treatments, as well as in waste management, where they help break down pollutants.
In agriculture, they improve soil health and reduce water usage, while in the textile and detergent industries, enzymes can replace harsh chemicals, reducing environmental impact.
The professor, who also serves as Professor Julius Okojie Central Research Laboratory Director at FUTA, called for greater collaboration between academia, industry, and environmental agencies.
She stated that this partnership is crucial for addressing sustainability challenges and creating practical solutions for various industries.
Professor Olajuyigbe concluded by reaffirming the importance of enzymes in advancing industry, health, and environmental protection.
She pointed out that investing in enzyme biotechnology will not only support the global fight against environmental degradation but also position Nigeria as a leader in promoting a circular bioeconomy.
The Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Timothy Amos, praised the lecture for shedding light on the potential of enzymes in fostering eco-friendly innovations and improving public health.
She lauded Professor Olajuyigbe for her significant contributions to research and academic leadership.
