Grooming Centre Nigeria, a microfinance institution, states that its university research grants are designed to help alleviate poverty in the country. The Centre explained that the grants are awarded to students in public and private tertiary institutions, with a focus on projects that offer real solutions to social and economic problems.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, Mr. Egulefu Chikezie, Head of Special Projects, announced the opening of this year’s grant application process, which marks its seventh year. Since the scheme began six years ago, 543 students—11 PhD and 532 others at HND, undergraduate, and master’s levels—have benefited. He said only 25 students from 8 institutions benefited in the first year, but applicants now come from over 55 schools.
Chikezie added that the grants promote research in areas such as MSMEs, youth and women’s development, inclusive finance, and rural growth—all aimed at reducing poverty and boosting Nigeria’s economy.
