Armed assailants stormed Government Secondary School Raka in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State late Saturday night, killing a teacher and abducting several people, according to Amnesty International Nigeria.
The incident adds to the growing wave of insecurity in the state and across northern Nigeria.
Amnesty International condemned the attack as a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and a clear indication of the government’s ongoing failure to protect civilians, particularly in conflict-prone areas.
“The attack on Government Science Secondary School Raka is a serious violation of international humanitarian law, and it undermines the right to education,” the human rights group said in a statement on Sunday.
Meanwhile, details of the incident are still emerging.
The number of abducted individuals has not yet been confirmed, but local authorities and security agencies are said to be conducting investigations and search operations in the area.
Amnesty International has warned that persistent attacks on schools by armed groups pose a serious threat to the future of children in northern Nigeria.
Repeated attacks and abductions have already forced the closure of several schools in some parts of the northern region, leaving thousands of children without access to formal education.
Zamfara has been one of the epicentres of violent banditry in Nigeria, with communities frequently targeted by armed groups operating with impunity. Despite repeated government assurances, insecurity in the region continues to deepen.
The spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident when contacted but said further details were still being verified.
