The College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK), established by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), will begin postgraduate programmes in September, officials have said.
PTDF Executive Secretary Ahmed Galadima Aminu announced the development on Tuesday during a facility tour with leaders of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
He said more than 2,000 applications had been received and screened for PhD programmes as the college prepares to admit its first cohort. The institution, registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and licensed by the National Universities Commission, will offer 19 programmes across three faculties and six departments.
Aminu explained that the college was created to build local capacity in oil and gas, reducing the need to send workers abroad for costly training. More than 15,000 Nigerians have already been trained overseas under PTDF sponsorship.
The new college has also signed partnerships with three UK universities – Strathclyde, Robert Gordon and Portsmouth – to allow students to complete parts of their studies in Britain. According to Aminu, the model will combine study in Kaduna with short academic stays in the UK.
