Exactly 250 women across four local government areas have been reached by the Lagos State Government with a combination of food support and nutrition education to promote healthier lifestyles at the grassroots.
The initiative carried out through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation under the “Ounje Lo Re Awo” programme aims not only to alleviate hunger but also to improve overall wellness among women in underserved communities. Speaking during the event held at the Isheri Skills Acquisition Centre, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Dada, stated that the programme was designed to extend beyond merely distributing food.
“This initiative is not just about food; it is about restoring dignity, promoting wellness, and empowering our women with the tools to live healthier, more informed lives,” she said. She highlighted that the outreach aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s broader vision of prioritising the welfare, healthcare, and empowerment of women in Lagos. “We thought it would be nice for us also to help women feed appropriately. It is one thing to have a source of livelihood; it is another thing to eat right,” she added.
In addition to receiving food items such as rice, beans, curry, eggs, fresh vegetables, and whole chickens, beneficiaries from Kosofe, Agboyi-Ketu, Ikeja, and Ifako-Ijaiye also participated in nutrition education sessions. “Every beneficiary got a full chicken—not half, not quarter—because we want them to feel valued and nourished,” Dada emphasised.
Nutritionist Sola Malomo, who spoke at the event, encouraged the women to adopt healthier food choices, advising them to incorporate more vegetables, water, and traditional staples like okra into their meals. Dada appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu for his sustained support for women-centric programmes. He also thanked healthcare professionals and community leaders for their involvement in the programme.
