On May 9, 2025, the Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO) launched a free medical programme for 300 students at Akengbuda Primary School in the Urora community, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, Edo State.
In partnership with the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), this initiative aims to provide essential healthcare services to children in the region.
The outreach includes free dental and eye screenings, skin treatments, tooth extractions, medication, and referrals to healthcare facilities.
Faith Osazuwa-Ojo, LAPO’s President and Chief Operating Officer, addressed the gathering, noting that the organisation’s mission since 1987 has been to empower underserved communities, particularly women, by providing access to healthcare, financial services, and social empowerment opportunities.
Represented by James-Wisdom Abhulimen, LAPO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Osazuwa-Ojo shared that LAPO’s health outreach programme has expanded from its initial pilot in Ugha Community, Uhumwonde Local Government Area, to eight communities across Edo, Oyo, and Abuja.
To date, over 16,000 individuals have benefited from these services.
According to her, there were challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare system, particularly in rural areas where primary health centres are underfunded and understaffed.
This outreach and LAPO’s other initiatives are part of the organisation’s effort to provide essential medical care to communities that would otherwise lack access due to poverty and geographical barriers.
Enahoro Isaac, headmaster of Akengbuda Primary School, expressed his gratitude for LAPO’s efforts, urging other organisations to follow suit in supporting grassroots healthcare. LAPO continues to call on corporate entities and individuals to partner in advancing healthcare access in underserved communities, with a vision to improve the health outcomes of Nigeria’s vulnerable populations.
