Lagos State University (LASU) has declared its support for the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, following the technical failures that marred the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in some parts of the country.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Thursday, the university commended Prof. Oloyede for taking full responsibility for the technical glitches that affected the results of 379,997 candidates who sat for the examination across Lagos and the Southeastern states.
The JAMB Registrar had, during a press conference held on Wednesday, May 14, admitted to both technical and human errors that compromised the integrity of the examination in the affected centres. He also announced that a retake examination would be conducted for the candidates whose results were invalidated.
LASU described Oloyede’s response as “courageous and humble,” noting that such public accountability is rare in Nigeria’s public service.
“Lagos State University stands solidly with Prof. Oloyede, affirming not only his courage and humility in this testing time but also the depth of character and integrity that have become the hallmarks of his glittering career as a public servant,” read in part.
The university further praised the Registrar’s decision to initiate an internal technical review, describing it as a reflection of his exceptional leadership.
Since assuming office in 2016, Oloyede has been credited with implementing reforms that have improved the transparency and credibility of JAMB’s operations. LASU stated that it has benefited from the enhanced processes, which have resulted in the admission of more qualified candidates to the institution.
The statement also highlighted Oloyede’s previous record as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, describing his career as one marked by a consistent commitment to excellence and integrity.
Calling on Nigerians to view the incident as a learning opportunity, LASU urged the public to support leaders who show accountability rather than condemn them for isolated setbacks.
“We believe that supporting leaders who demonstrate accountability, rather than condemning them for isolated shortcomings, is essential for Nigeria’s progress,” the statement added.
