The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo A. Adelabu, has recently visited the University of Maiduguri to inspect a 12KVA solar power project being built under the Federal Government’s Energising Education Programme.
The project, which is almost completed, is expected to supply clean and steady electricity to both the University of Maiduguri and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH). The Rural Electrification Agency is handling it and is part of the government’s efforts to reduce energy costs in public institutions.
After inspecting the project on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, the Minister expressed his impression of the quality and speed of the work. He explained that the solar system is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and supports the global move towards clean and safe energy. He also noted that it will help reduce harmful emissions and improve power supply to schools and hospitals. Chief Adelabu stated that the Energising Education Programme has already completed its first phase, and this project is part of its second phase. He added that plans for the third phase are already underway and will cover additional schools and institutions.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, represented by Professor Yakubu Muktar, thanked the Federal Government for selecting the university for the solar project, stating that it will significantly enhance teaching, learning, and research. Additionally, the Chief Medical Director of UMTH, Professor Ahmed Ahijo, praised the government for including the hospital, stating that the project is already meeting approximately 50% of their daily power needs and has improved healthcare delivery. He appealed for more support to increase the system’s storage so the hospital could enjoy 24-hour power.
The Project Engineer from the Rural Electrification Agency, Engr. Joro Salau thanked both the university and the hospital for their cooperation and promised that the project would deliver reliable and efficient power once completed.
