Miwa Open University Tackles Nigeria’s Admission Crisis with Bold Expansion Plans

Miwa Open University, Nigeria’s first private tech-driven Open University, has committed to addressing the country’s admission crisis, which affects many qualified candidates unable to secure university placements due to limited spaces in government-owned institutions.

 The University aims to enrol over one million students within ten years while maintaining high academic standards.

Professor Tayo Arulogun, the University’s Vice Chancellor, shared this goal at Tuesday’s opening (May 6) of its Lagos Study Centre in Yaba.

Since its inception two years ago, the University has rapidly grown its student body, increasing from around 500 students in its first cohort to more than 5,000 last year.

The University plans to reach over 17,000 students by the end of this year and aims for 100,000 by 2027, ultimately enrolling one million students by 2033.

Arulogun, a professor of Computer System Engineering, emphasised the University’s focus on quality and quantity in education.

Miwa Open University combines digital learning with physical classroom experiences, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Students can benefit from electricity, internet access, and laboratories, ensuring a seamless educational experience.

The University’s blended learning model is the first of its kind in Africa. Arulogun added that plans are underway to expand study centres across Nigeria, ensuring that students in major cities or remote areas can access a world-class education.

Students in cities like Lagos or Abuja will attend flagship centres, while those in smaller towns will connect digitally for full participation, enjoying the same level of support.

Sim Shagaya, the Chancellor of Miwa Open University and CEO of uLesson Education Ltd, explained that the University’s use of AI-powered teaching technology would revolutionise learning.

Shagaya noted that Nigeria’s education system has struggled to accommodate the millions of students sitting for entrance exams annually, with fewer than 600,000 gaining admission due to space constraints.

 By leveraging AI, the University can offer personalised learning experiences tailored to each student’s needs, ensuring global standards of education at a reduced cost.
