On April 30, 2025, the Nigerian Bar Association’s Legal Education Committee (NBA-LEC) convened a Regional Townhall Workshop at Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, advocating for increased investment in legal education to produce practice-ready lawyers capable of contributing to Nigeria’s development.
The event, drawing over 300 participants, including law teachers, students, and stakeholders from southeastern universities, featured presentations from institutions such as Abia State University, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, IMSU, and Enugu State University of Science and Technology.
Professor Damilola Olawuyi, SAN, Chairman of NBA-LEC and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Afe Babalola University, spoke on the need to revise curricula and enhance infrastructure, noting that many law faculties lack functional ICT centres and modern teaching tools.
IMSU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Uchefula Chukwumaeze, SAN, and Workshop Chairman, Prof. Chimezie Okorie, SAN, reiterated the need for stakeholder support in providing educational materials and fostering collaboration between legal education and relevant authorities.
The discussions centred on underfunding, inadequate infrastructure, poor remuneration, and limited access to legal information, all of which impact the quality of legal education and ethical standards within the profession.
The workshop commended the NBA’s leadership for the initiative and urged swift implementation of the NBA Legal Education Endowment Fund to support infrastructure and technology upgrades.
Participants also called for joint research projects, tailored research programs, and subsidised conferences to bridge the theoretical and practical aspects of legal education.
