NGO Combines Sports and Mental Health Awareness in Abuja Wellness Drive

A non-governmental organisation, the Global Initiative for Women in Leadership (GIFWIL), has introduced a novel approach to community health by integrating sports with mental wellness advocacy. The initiative was showcased on Thursday during the Badminton Fitness for Good Health tournament held in Abuja, where participants engaged in physical activities alongside mental health education sessions.

Founder of the organisation, Lady Sarah Umahi, said the event was part of ongoing efforts to promote holistic well-being, combining education, empowerment, and physical and psychological health. A key highlight of the event was a mental health session facilitated by Dr James Iwowarri, who underscored the importance of emotional and psychological health in overall wellness. “Health is not just physical; it is also mental and emotional,” Dr Iwowarri said, while encouraging regular physical activity to support emotional stability.

Lady Umahi noted that the event exemplified GIFWIL’s commitment to creating inclusive platforms where health promotion can be engaging and accessible to all. “We believe that outreach programmes focused on wellness can be both impactful and enjoyable. This tournament brought together families and individuals in a healthy, energetic atmosphere,” she said. She added that the organisation would continue to organise health-focused events to foster stronger communities and promote healthy living practices nationwide.
