Nigeria failed to register a single medal at the 2025 FISU World University Games held in Germany, finishing among the 100+ participating nations that returned empty-handed from the global collegiate sports festival.
The competition, which ran from July 16 to 27 across six German cities, including Berlin, Bochum, and Essen, hosted over 8,500 student-athletes from more than 150 countries, competing in 18 disciplines ranging from athletics and swimming to judo and fencing. Despite high expectations, Nigeria’s delegation was unable to make a podium appearance in any event.
Leading the medal table was Japan, which emerged as the overall best-performing nation with 34 golds, 21 silvers, and 24 bronzes (79 total). Close behind was China with 30 gold medals, while the United States followed in third place with 28 golds and the highest overall medal count of 84. South Korea, Italy, and host nation Germany also ranked among the top six. At the same time, South Africa stood out as the best-performing African country, finishing 7th with 6 golds and a total of 19 medals.
The 2025 edition marks another missed opportunity for Nigeria, which has historically struggled to compete at the university level due to limited funding, outdated sports infrastructure, and inadequate athlete support. As the curtain falls on the Rhine-Ruhr Games, questions linger over what reforms are needed to ensure Nigeria’s student-athletes are more competitive in future global university competitions.
