Nigeria has taken a significant step in leveraging technology with the launch of a $500,000 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Scaling Hub. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is supporting it.
The project is led by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. It was officially launched in Abuja during a signing ceremony between Minister Dr Bosun Tijani and Bill Gates.
The hub will help grow AI solutions to improve key areas, including health, agriculture, and education. These areas affect small businesses and poor communities the most.
Dr Tijani said the AI Scaling Hub would drive collaboration among innovators, public sector players, and private enterprises to develop and deploy AI solutions that solve real problems.
“This is about identifying and scaling ideas that improve lives and unlock business opportunities,” he noted.
In a brief comment, the Gates Foundation’s Nigeria Country Director, Uche Amaonwu, emphasised the need for the active involvement of local talent in delivering impact on the project.
He noted that for small business owners and entrepreneurs, especially in agriculture and education, this initiative could open doors to AI tools that can help to enhance productivity, improve decision-making, and enhance service delivery.
