The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Aisha Garba, has raised alarm over the poor state of Nigeria’s education system. She said the country is facing a severe crisis that demands urgent action from everyone.
Speaking at a meeting in Abuja with state education leaders and partners like the World Bank and UNICEF, Dr Garba said over 20 million Nigerian children are out of school. Even those in school struggle to read or do basic maths. She warned that the future of Nigerian children—and the country—is at risk if the problem is not urgently addressed. To tackle the crisis, Dr Garba launched the HOPE-EDU programme, a $552 million partnership between the Federal Government, the World Bank, and the Global Partnership for Education. The programme aims to improve learning and bring more children back to school across the country through state-led efforts.
