The Director and Chief Executive of the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Kaduna, Prof. Sadiya Sani-Daura, has commended President Bola Tinubu for repositioning Nigeria’s education sector through strategic reforms.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the NTI headquarters in Kaduna, Sani-Daura praised the Tinubu administration for introducing impactful programmes aimed at enhancing professionalism in teacher training under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
She noted that the institute had recorded significant progress with the support of the Federal Ministry of Education, which she said was making valuable contributions to the sector.
“We are lucky to have both a Minister and a State Minister who are highly active and committed to promoting excellence in the sector,” she said.
Sani-Daura stated that her role as Director and Chief Executive of NTI was an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national development through education, which she described as key to addressing many of the country’s challenges.
She said the NTI, with strong backing from the Federal Ministry of Education, was taking deliberate steps to achieve its objectives.
“The ministry is carrying us along, and that is all we ask—to be given the space to deliver on our mandate.
“Although NTI operates at the national level, we also collaborate with state governments through our zonal offices to provide the necessary teacher training,” she said.
According to her, NTI is establishing study centres across all 774 local government areas to enhance accessibility and coordination.
She expressed confidence that, within the next five to 10 years, the NTI would become a leading institution in teacher education, both nationally and globally.
“In Nigeria, we aim to become a regulatory body that monitors teacher training activities across both public and private sectors.
“The NTI Act mandates us to train teachers at all levels—from primary through to tertiary education,” she explained.
Sani-Daura also highlighted the institute’s efforts to expand training to underserved communities by utilising technology. She stated that the NTI had established an ICT department and aligned its organisational structure with global standards in teacher education.
“With the growing population, the demand for teachers is increasing. NTI is well-positioned to meet this need by building capacity and supporting curriculum development at all levels of education. That remains a core part of our mandate,” she added.
