Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, received honorary Doctor of Science degrees in Social and Economic Development at the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU) in Okerenkoko on Saturday.
The award was part of the university’s 2nd Combined Convocation ceremony, where Senator James Manager and Engr. Ebipador Ogionwo were also honoured with Doctor of Science degrees in National Development and Industrial Development, respectively.
Governor Oborevwori, represented by Delta’s Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerowho Tonukari, expressed deep appreciation for the recognition, calling it a tribute to the Delta people’s resilience and his administration’s collective efforts.
He spoke further on how the honour was personal and reflected the progress made in Delta State and Nigeria.
Oborevwori extended gratitude to the university’s leadership, noting that the award symbolised the institution’s commitment to acknowledging leadership, service, and societal development.
He added on his government’s strong belief in education, recognising NMU as a key driver of progress in historically marginalised riverine communities.
He also added on the ongoing state government support in collaboration with the federal government, such as the construction of a faculty complex and improvements to the road connecting Okerenkoko to the university’s permanent site.
Professor Emmanuel Adigio, NMU’s Vice Chancellor, praised Governor Oborevwori for his significant contributions to the university’s development, particularly the infrastructure projects that support the institution’s growth.
In his address to the graduates, Governor Oborevwori congratulated them, urging them to embody the values of excellence, integrity, and innovation instilled by the university as they take on new challenges.
