The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has donated the state model college, located at Onijaganjagan near Abeokuta, to serve as the initial facility for the newly established Federal University of Medical Sciences, Abeokuta (FUMSA).
The announcement was made during the official commissioning of capital projects at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta on Saturday.
Governor Abiodun highlighted the importance of collaboration between state governments and the federal government in advancing healthcare initiatives. He noted that this is the second time Ogun State has donated to the health sector.
Governor Abiodun explained that Dr Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education and former Minister of State for Health, had brought to his attention the challenges faced in the commencement of FUMMSA.
According to Dr Alausa, the current federal funding allocated for the university’s takeoff would likely only cover the fencing of the green location. Consequently, he requested that the state consider donating an existing facility to facilitate the university’s operations.
Following consultations, the Ogun State government resolved to donate the model college at Onijaganjagan to support the establishment of the new university. The Governor expressed appreciation for the federal government’s efforts in establishing the institution.
Governor Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to healthcare as a fundamental human right and emphasised the necessity of making medical services accessible to all citizens. He further stated that Ogun State would continue to invest in primary and secondary healthcare infrastructure, recognising that a healthy population is essential for productivity and social development.
Moreover, the Governor reiterated his administration’s support for the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, and other medical institutions to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective healthcare services. He emphasised the importance of collaboration among stakeholders as crucial to achieving sustainable and inclusive development.
Governor Abiodun also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his reform-driven approach to the health sector, noting that the federal government has strengthened primary healthcare and expanded health insurance coverage through the National Health Insurance Authority.
Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, stated that the projects commissioned would enhance the status of the Federal Medical Centre as a centre of medical excellence in both Ogun State and Nigeria.
