A new report shows that 15,421 Nigerian-trained nurses and midwives have moved to the UK between 2017 and 2025. This makes Nigeria the third highest supplier of foreign nurses to the UK, after India and the Philippines. The number of Nigerian nurses in the UK rose by 4.1%, from 14,815 in September 2024 to 15,421 by March 2025.
However, fewer new nurses are now entering the field. This year, the number of new Nigerian recruits dropped by 25.5%. Also, 5,276 foreign-trained nurses left the UK in the past year. The UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) stated that the decline is attributed to tighter visa rules, higher salaries in other countries, and a new UK plan to recruit more local nurses. The NMC is calling for more fairness and diversity in the healthcare system.
