Technology Complements, will Not Replace Teachers – TETFund Boss

The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Architect Sonny Echono, has said technology cannot replace teachers but remains a vital tool for transforming education.

Speaking at the 15th Convocation Lecture of Osun State University, Echono, in a lecture titled “Digital Transformation in Higher Education: Building Skills in Graduates for Global Competitiveness”, he stressed that despite challenges confronting Nigeria’s higher institutions, digital tools present tremendous opportunities.

He identified infrastructure deficits, outdated curricula, limited faculty capacity, and inadequate funding as significant obstacles to the adoption of technology in schools. However, he noted that mobile technology and digital platforms have already driven significant transformation in the sector.

“For Nigeria, embracing this paradigm shift offers both an urgent challenge and an unprecedented opportunity. By redesigning curricula, strengthening faculty, investing in infrastructure, and leveraging platforms like TETFund’s TERAS, higher institutions can equip graduates with digital skills,” Echono said.

He added that the future of higher education in Nigeria depends on producing innovation-driven graduates who are globally competitive.
