Nigeria’s chess player and Guinness World Record Holder took his GWR certificate to President Tinubu for national recognition on Monday.
Winning the Guinness World Record for the Longest Chess Marathon, Tunde Onakoya honoured the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Presidential Villa. The duo celebrated the win in grand style. The President congratulated Onakoya on his efforts as a chess player and his work in creating opportunities for vibrant young people in the streets of Lagos.
Tinubu emphasised the importance of people like Onakoya in society and promised to support his Chess in Slum Africa Initiative. He vowed to scale the initiative internationally and called on other prominent Nigerians to join hands in bettering the future of the youth.
The President further described Onakoya’s win as a good testament to resilience. He stated that achievement should serve as a beacon of hope for potential Nigerian youth. Onakoya entered the limelight when he won the Guinness World Record for the Longest Chess Marathon, playing nonstop for over 58 hours in New York’s Times Square.
The GWR chess player has demonstrated proficiency and resilience through his remarkable story of going from grass to grace. His ability to create opportunities for young children struggling with no career support continues to wow the general public.
