Two Nigerians have made history in London by becoming mayors in their respective boroughs. Opeyemi Bright was sworn in as the Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, while Jason Jackson took office as the Mayor of Islington on May 19, 2025.
Their elections mark the first time Nigerian-born individuals have held these important leadership roles.
Opeyemi Bright, 29, is the youngest person ever to become Civic Mayor in Barking and Dagenham.
She has been a council member since 2018, when she was elected as the borough’s youngest Labour councillor at just 22.
Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Opeyemi’s family has a strong background in public service. Her mother served as Civic Mayor of Hackney in 2006.
Before taking on her mayoral duties full-time, Opeyemi worked as a Chartered Accountant and in senior roles in investment banking and tech.
She said she plans to spend her year as mayor engaging directly with local schools, businesses, and residents to improve the community she calls home.
Jason Jackson, from Ika Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, is the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since the borough was established in 1900.
He grew up in Nigeria, attending primary school and Holy Family College in Abak before moving to the UK as a teenager.
Jason studied Business Law and Media Studies and holds a master’s degree from King’s College London.
Since he was elected a councillor in 2022, he has served as Chair of Islington’s Homes and Communities Committee.
He is also a business consultant and social entrepreneur with interests in real estate, agriculture, education, and ethical AI.
Upon assuming office, Jason expressed his commitment to serving Islington’s diverse communities, supporting young people and families, and helping local businesses thrive.
Both leaders’ historic appointments show the growing influence of Nigerians in public service abroad and reflect their dedication to their communities in London.
