Two University of Ibadan Students Win Big in the French Embassy’s Plastic Challenge

Two students from the University of Ibadan (UI) have made the school proud by winning in the French Embassy’s “Get Creative with Plastic” Challenge. This competition is part of the Plastic Free Campus Awareness Initiative, funded by the French Embassy Fund (FEF) Project. Out of ten Nigerian universities selected, UI was the only one to produce two winners.

The Vice Chancellor of UI, Professor K. O. Adebowale, supported the initiative through the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Strategic Partnerships, led by Professor Oluyemisi Bamgbose SAN. Other top university officials who supported the project include Professor P. O. Olapegba (DVC Administration), Professor Aderonke Baiyeroju (DVC Academics), and Mr. G. O. Saliu, the Registrar.

Professor Aina O. Adeogun from the Department of Zoology served as the project’s main coordinator on campus. She collaborated with the Students’ Union, the Public Relations Unit, and the ITEMs Unit to ensure students became involved. Their efforts paid off, resulting in high student participation. Over 300 students took part in the challenge at UI, and more than 100 creative entries were submitted. This resulted in UI achieving the highest level of participation among the ten universities involved.

Thanks to this intense effort, two students from UI were declared winners. They are Paul Debbie, a 300-level student from the Department of Environmental Health Science, who won in the Music Category, and Adekunle Julius Akorede, a 300-level student from the Department of Physiology, who won in the Writing Category.
