The University of Ibadan (UI) has opened the 2025 edition of Jaw War, described as Africa’s most significant public speaking competition.
The six-week inter-faculty contest, themed “Africa in the First Century and Beyond: Power, Progress and Possibility”, was launched at the New Faculty Lecture Theatre. This year’s event is organised in partnership with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and will focus on food security and nutrition.
President of TLDS, organisers of the debate, Peace Babatimileyin, said the competition spans seven rounds and aims to showcase how young people can contribute to solving Africa’s challenges.
Tomisin Odunbaku, National Coordinator of the Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network under GAIN, stated that the collaboration was timely, noting that three in five Nigerian children are malnourished and that nine in ten people consume contaminated food. He added that insights from the debates could help shape policy and private sector action.
The 2025 edition will feature contests across halls of residence and faculties, culminating in a finale in October at Nigeria’s premier university.
